The need for #CriticalMinerals, like #lithium or #RareEarth #minerals for use in gadgets and as part of the transition to clean energy has never been greater. Mendenhall Opportunity 22-13, “Constraining the geologic and tectonic conditions of critical element mineralization in the Mojave Desert, California” (https://www.usgs.gov/centers/mendenhall-research-fellowship-program/22-13-constraining-geologic-and-tectonic-conditions), seeks a #postdoc to apply #GeologicMapping, #geochemistry, and #geochronology to better characterize critical minerals systems in the Mojave. A re- #introduction I guess… I’m a transplanted New Englander (#celtics, #redsox) living in the East Bay #sfba. I #hike, #run, #bake, still watch #TheSimpsons, play #ukulele, and make #geologicmaps (#geology, #geomorphology, #tectonics) mostly in the #Mojave desert. I also dabble in cosmogenic nuclide #geochronology to learn about the timing of #Pleistocene #glacier retreat and #landscapeevolution. Earth Science in the Public Service. Parallel laminations in an eolian sand dune deposit in the wasters #Mojave for this #FieldPhotoFriday. We used #luminescence #geochronology to constrain the age of these deposits to ~30,000 years old. They were most likely blown off of the dry lake bed of #Pleistocene Lake Thompson during a low stand and deposited up against high topography where we collected them.

Thinking of this because the report and #map describing the #LastGlacialMaximum glacial extent in Yosemite and the surrounding area, including a bunch of new #cosmogenic #beryllium10 #geochronology. This was jointly published by the #USGS and #NationalParkService on the web in 2019 (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/sim3414), but with delays is only just now out in print. There’s just something more satisfying about having a professionally printed map to hang the wall.
