First they came for the insects.
Then mother earth fell ill and didn't feed us no more...
A terrible video from a congolaise cobalt mine. #Geology #mining Nobody should have to work in such conditions. Madness.

Une chouette Photo. Un cordon de policiers sur la falaise pour protéger cette monstrueuse machine en contrebas qui est prête à avaler le village de #Lützerath #geology #mining
We are children of the ice age.The incredible development of mankind was due to cold temperatures and the necessity to use fur & fire to keep warm, that triggered new technologies. In warmer climates reptiles & insects have a competitive advantage. Unfortunately, we are now victims of our success: Overpopulation and those fires that gave us an advantage over other species now change our climat too fast for us to adapt and in a way that disadvantages us. #climate #geology
Mining & space flight are related:
Both mean exploration of new & unknown territory, for us surface beings. And if men ever want to live on other moons or planets, they'll need to dig themselves in - and use what they extract.
On other planets mining makes a lot of sens: Creation of space protected from cosmic rays, possibility of a controlled atmosphere, raw materials...https://www.mining-technology.com/features/mining-the-moon/

The very beginning of diagenesis : Banks of stratified sand eroded by high tide at the base of dunes that wind drove inland.

This is a beautiful shining black rock most people born before the end of the 70s will immediately recognize, but younger generations much less. I took it many years ago in a Westfalian mine, 1400 m below see level. Because of the geothermic gradient, the walls of the mine were hot: About 40 C°. The yellow stuff is Marcasite. Marcasite is often fond in that rock, but unwanted...Do you know the name of the black stuff? #Geology
I like abandoned mines. These are
ferric oolithes on limestone from a small open pit mine in South-West France. The mine was abandoned around 1890. #Geology
Hi
I’m migrating from twitter and hope to find here new and old friends/colleagues.
I mostly post about #earthquake #geology, #paleoseismology and #seismic #hazard.
I 😍 field work! And outdoor activity in general (🚲 🏃♂️ 🏊♀️).
I work at the French Institute for Nuclear Safety (IRSN https://www.irsn.fr/) and run my research worldwide.
