Why so many earthquakes? #GeoNet #NZ
"In the first six months of 2023 we located almost eleven thousand earthquakes in and around Aotearoa New Zealand. So, is that a lot for us? It’s actually pretty spot on! On average, we locate over 20,000 earthquakes a year at GeoNet. Around 100-150 of these quakes are large enough to be felt – the others we only know about because they are recorded by our sensitive seismographs."
Ooh, cool explainer from GeoNet, about something I didn't even realise was happening!

Many relevant seismic waveforms appear to be unavailable from the #IRIS and #Geonet repositories.
I wonder if this has to do with the #Inmarsat #satellite #outage.
If so this is a really nasty single point of failure.

Some light shaking just happened here in #TeWhanganuiATara. 5.3 according to #GeoNet. Lasted for about 10-15 seconds.
I could actually hear a deep hum right before it started. I’m getting better at not getting scared at the shaking.
