Vaccine mandates save the economy: βIn scenarios involving the emergence of a novel, more transmissible variant, against which vaccination and previous infection offer moderate protection, the estimated net benefits are potentially large. They reach almost $20,000 per additional vaccinated individual, with more than 20,000 total deaths averted over the 6-month period assessed.β #COVID19 #GetABooster
βDespite the widespread belief that the pandemic is over, death and disruption continue.β

Mandates are working, no matter what GQP may say. My work has instituted a vax mandate& every one of the co-workers who have dragged their feet are making appointments. As of Feb 9th, my place will be 100% vaccinated.

@DeterminedTherapist Thanks for this info. I didn't know that boosters are recommended at five months post the Pfizer series now. I've seen in other countries that it's being recommended at three or four months. I can't recommend the booster enough. Please #GetABooster.

8% of the population is taking up 75% of hospital beds. That's insane.

Gov. Larry Hogan gave some staggering statistics about Maryland to Dana Bash on State of the Union this morning:
92% of Marylanders are fully vaccinated against the coronavirus (I'm assuming this is the old definition of two shots of Pfizer/Moderna or one of J&J, rather than three with the booster, but please #GetABooster if it has been six months past your second Pfizer/Moderna or two past your J&J).
75% of the 2000 Marylanders who are currently hospitalized are unvaccinated. #GetVaccinated
Hospitals in Maryland and everywhere else are overwhelmed. Daily cases in the USA are at record highs right now. Wherever you live, you don't want to be hospitalized because you didn't get a simple series of shots.
I remember how sick and miserable I was this time last year when vaccines weren't yet available and I caught covid despite all my precautions.
It's distressing to see such a rise in cases a year later, but knowing that the vaccines are mitigating the worst of the symptoms for the people I care about helps. I hope everyone here on DTown that is ill feels better soon. Sending tea &love.π΅βπβ
For those out there in the fediverse who still aren't vaccinated, a reminder -don't wait any longer.

β¬οΈ The only things that kept our holiday from a complete COVID debacle.
βοΈπ· While all fully vaccinated, 50% of our extended family became infected since 12/24. Symptoms mild to moderate, none required medical care. My wife and I still test negative. For all the bad conservative Douglas County does, local testing is available even with a long wait. So frustrating as all tried to be careful.
I fear the sudden change in CDC guidance will cause even less compliance and more risk when our schools open next week.
I only hope the New Year will bring us a better spring for all!

It never ceases to amaze me just how many Americans, when faced with a legitimate threat, can be relied upon to do the one thing most likely to make it worse.
In response to the danger and disruption of a deadly pandemic, itβs easy for reasonable people to follow mitigation policies backed by science. And yet a dismayingly large number of Americans are choosing instead to get angry at simple, safe, effective public health measures like getting vaccinated and wearing masks. Unwilling to own their unpleasant feelings, they foolishly lash out at public officials and others who are only trying to save lives and lift us out of crisis mode.
Anxiety is a normal part of the human experience. Mature adulthood requires that we learn to manage it with healthy, socially responsible coping strategies. Itβs hard to imagine a more childish, self-destructive response to lifeβs challenges than weβre currently seeing in this country. #GetVaccinated and #GetABooster already.
@MAYL @Jen @TonyStark @KARiley40 Germany +116 deaths. Maybe you βhabeβ some work to do over there MAYL.

Vaccination = economic prosperity.
It's that simple. Everyone gets vaccinated and this Covid problem goes away. The formula is universal. It works in all nations and demographics. For some reason, huge populations have not discovered the formula. So here it is. Perhaps if all politicians and media personalities would inform the public of the formula, instead of trying to twist it even though they, themselves, are vaccinated, we would no longer be having this discussion of Covid shutdowns and economic contraction.
Incidentally, our economy is global, in case anyone didn't know. #GetVaccinated #GetABooster
