3/ Dar's homepage is dar.linux.free.fr/ . As a simple file archiver tool, dar is great. Random access is preserved, you can compress with or . You can encrypt with or symmetric . You can stream if you want. You can split ("slice") across multiple media, and dar will prompt you for the slice(s) you need and seek you right to them.

That's cool, but we're just getting started.

Today generated its first well formed encrypted and signed e-mail!

It used (via SOP) for the encryption, but pulled keys from my keychain.

This is a milestone!

Uses for 6/ I got started with this by desiring an machine for sensitive things like tax records, signing, etc. If I was going to be using this often - say, daily or weekly - I didn't want to manually have to worry about "did this data successfully get there" all the time. I know how often USB drives fail. So, reliable sneakernet FTW. It works beautifully and can even send backups to my backup server (which is also sneakernet-capable).

@Milkman76 Well put. I absolutely agree. It is encouraging to see attempts at alternatives - , . And more broadly, / , , , , , , / / , , and so forth. But obviously, while these are all growing, aside from maybe Signal, they are tiny compared to the spyware we all tolerate daily.

I talked about some of these topics here: complete.org/recovering-our-lo

I have been interested in encryption lately; github.com/FiloSottile/age . Very simple to use and has a nice property of never emitting any un-authenticated data. I believe piping from /#gpg still can have unauthenticated data leave the pipeline. @liw do you know if is better about that, or is that a fundamental weakness in , or did I get it all wrong entirely?

doesn't do signing, but /#minisign could make a nice companion for that purpose!
