Finally reading Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’ and for all the of that era, it’s is at best . There are glaring details missing from the tale to show that there was little first had experience and he must have stayed mainly on his boat as did many of his learned predecessors. An easy one: no snakes?

Captain Canot/Twenty Years of an African Slaver makes for more believable even entertaining reading without the glaring and precedes Conrad by almost four decades.

Sulu the book-reading black cat recommends: "The Haunted Train: Creepy Tales from the Railways" edited by Rayne Hall.

(Sulu may be biased, because there's a black cat on the book cover. 😂 )

Ebook and paperback.

🩸Victorian disaster men🩸 -part 3!! Had to design Adam (the creature) for this one. Can’t wait to draw him some more!

“Adam and Hyde would absolutely get along, something neither Jekyll nor Frankenstein approves of but they are powerless to stop it happening. And Hyde would probably do a better job of building a future Eve, something Victor would get very upset at.”

🩸Victorian disaster men🩸 -part 2, this time courtesy of tumblr:

“I might remember wrong, but didn't Victor never finish his degree? That is something Dr Jekyll could absolutely hold over him. Alternatively, Frankenstein and Hyde drinking together, one out of stress one out of malice.”

I've started publishing a novel in serial on substack. I’ve been hesitating about doing this, for so many reasons, and you know what…the time is right.

I’m ready. It’s ready. I hope maybe you’re interested.

If you like magic realism, unreliable narrators, 19th century Gothic, dreamy slipstream type stories, and mysteries…you’ll like this. Maybe.

Sweeney Todd, or the String of Pearls (1847), AKA The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, most famous of the 19th century penny dreadfuls, lurid crime and horror pot-boilers published in weekly instalments with cliff-hanger endings.

This is where popular fiction begins.

Wonderfully sensationalistic and gruesome, and delightfully breathless and overheated. Sweeney Todd is an epic villain.

Ann Radcliffe’s The Italian (1796). One of the masterpieces of the first wave of gothic fiction. Absurdly complicated and melodramatic and and the characterisations are crude.

The book does have considerable strengths though. She is exceptionally good at creating suspense and in ratcheting up the tension. And a reader in the 1790s would have found it easier to empathise with characters obsessed with family honour.

What am I doing this evening? Why, I am dividing James Hogg's Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner into daily chunks for a group read.

Part one of the climactic moments is done, and tomorrow will be the dedicated to the second half. With Monday being a free day, I'm set to finish 'Primavera' this weekend and get started with revisions and edits next weekend.

Thought I'd also dust off the moodboard I put together for this book.

The Countess de Mar was one of my first published short stories - originally in a university journal in 2016 and then reprinted in LampLight Magazine.

It's got a doomed countess, a pining lady's maid and multiple timelines, and I hope you love it!

The Picture of Dorian Gray (Oscar Wilde) – A lovely bout of gothic hedonism in this classic from Wilde I always enjoy. A old tale of selling your soul for youth and beauty though perhaps Dorian’s sins in his libertine lifestyle are perhaps just an average Friday for some of us in 2022. Alas, all I have to cover my sins are concealer.

You know what... why not both? Works perfectly for me -- this movement especially.

Winter and Summer: yeah, that'll work. There you go. Even the playlist is a work-in-progress.
