In folklore there is a story about ‘Malley who, after being told that she was not allowed to go to sea because she was a girl and her long hair could get caught in the lines, cut them off without further ado. This is how she got her nickname 'Gráinne Mhaol' ('mhaol' means bald or short-haired), which was later anglicized to 'Granuaile'.
