In #Irish folklore there is a story about #GraceO‘Malley who, after being told that she was not allowed to go to sea because she was a girl and her long hair could get caught in the lines, cut them off without further ado. This is how she got her nickname 'Gráinne Mhaol' ('mhaol' means bald or short-haired), which was later anglicized to 'Granuaile'.

For Ferlee, Fergar and Ferrogan were born reavers, the three foster-brothers of the high king were banished frome #Ireland. On the seas they met another exiled chief, Ingcel the One-Eyed, son of the King of Britain. Joining forces with that notorious pirate they attacked the fortress in which Ingcel's father, mother, and brothers were guests at the time, and all were destroyed in a single night.

The small fortress in Rockfleet Bay became #GraceO'Malley`s main residence, surrounded by extensive grounds for her loyal men and family, and with her fleet safely anchored in the hidden bay.

Legend has it that #Granuaile threaded the mooring rope of her ship through the embrasure on the south wall of the castle up to her bedchamber on the last floor and tied it to her bedpost at night.
