Major employers in the USA & the UK recruit a disproportionate number of #graduates from 'elite' #universities (Ivy League & Oxbridge).

There are 2 problems here:

a. this narrows the pool of innovative 'talent' being drawn on; recruiters are missing a pool of graduate who may being much of value to a #business;

b. this is a key mechanism of the maintenance of social #inequality. Certainly in both US & UK 'widening participation' is helping, but does this effect carry through to recruitment?

There remains a significant but falling premium for UK #graduates, in part be due to access to the #professions whose degree requirements remain pretty robust.

However, its also worth noting that non-degree employment seems to be shifting into high(er) skills, albeit at a gradual rate (replacing 'over-qualified' graduates?).

Does a slow shift to highly skilled non-degree holders indicate the success of #apprenticeships?

While the world seems to be recovering to pre-Covid levels of economic activity & #employment, the UK is struggling;

excluding the age group who may have retired early, males in employment between 18-54 remains below pre-pandemic levels. Moreover, men who left school at 16 (before the law change), continue to see their employment rate falling.

So while #graduates are doing OK, for non-graduates getting work remains difficult.

More political problems in the making?

#COP27 experience #2: poorer governments are also poorer in that they don‘t get what the richer ones are doing. many end up supporting any decision through which they get (money, etc.); without determining what and how much they get. unpaid support by people who know the richer one‘s tricks #graduates can change this. a few dozen to a few hundred people can make a difference

#Guardian reports abuse of agricultural workers. Focus is on Ukrainian #graduates working in UK farms. Contrast made between Ukrainian economic migrants and refugees.

A good article but weakened by its probably unintended implication that Ukrainian graduates should be excused abuse while non-educated non-Ukrainians can be left to suffer.

Whatever, the basic principle that slavery supports UK economy and this is wrong and must stop is absolutely correct.
