Last month I took cuttings from 17 old apple trees growing in an abandoned poor farm orchard.
My goal is to identify the varieties that were planted about 100 yrs ago. (See post from March 20 for more info.)
About 2 weeks ago, I grafted cuttings onto rootstock. Today I planted these little trees at a friend's farm.
Back-ups are always good, so I also grafted onto a vigorous young tree at my urban microfarm. These branches should start bearing fruit in 3 or 4 yrs.
I spent this afternoon crawling through honeysuckle, buckthorn and dogwood to take cuttings from the surviving apple trees in the abandoned orchard.
I found 17! Some of them don’t have much time left.
I will graft the cuttings this spring, then these plants get another chance to grow and fruit.
Some day, maybe, I’ll figure out what varieties were planted in the orchard long ago. Most likely, these varieties are still grown today, but you never know what could turn up.
I'm wondering if I could graft delicata onto tromboncino root stock. Someone must have tried this already. Bt might work well enough in a grafted plant - though you would have to inject between every node since the channels are blocked at the nodes.

Hoping to get some advice from the #fruitgrowing people of Mastodon. In the Spring, I grafted a bunch of Apples and planted them in 5 gallon buckets. The plan was, once Fall hit, they would go dormant and I would move them to a nursery bed for winter before the ground froze.
These trees will not go dormant. They're still healthy and green looking like they were mid summer and the ground is about to freeze. Am I good to just transplant these while they're not dormant?
