Day 15 - First day of issue stamp challenge
Australian classical music is not the theme of this post but I will make it so.
The stamp celebrates the life of Percy Grainger, born 7 July 1982, in Brighton Victoria. The stamp recognises his centenary. He donated much of what he cherished to start the Music And Grainger museum at the Melbourne in 1938 despite having become an American - where he lived and died from 1914. Readers may know his work “Country Garden”, musicians respect him for his experimental work.
I have a preference to expand the note so I can reference Peggy Granvile-Hicks a Melbourne Australian, born 30 years after him. I do not think she has been recognised on a stamp.
But, she too studied in London, became a recognised composer, and an American. You may not know her work as well however she claimed the opening passage of Vaughan Williams 4th Symphony was taken from her Sinfornietta for Small Orchestra (1935) and reappears in other of his works, as he did with other themes used in his music.
