More #political #hypocrisy:

So, the #WorldBank has been happily supporting #fossilfuel business via trade financing even as it claims it is pushing for a #greentransition.

Somehow, the #energy firms keep getting their fingers into the pot of state (and global) economic support... its almost like they had good connections & were effective lobbyists.

Anyone who thinks shifting to alternate #energy sources will be easy might want to look back to #tobacco for the fossil fuel playbook!

So, putting their finger(s) to the wind, companies are clamouring to talk to the #LabourParty... partly driven by needing to cosy up to the (prospective) next Govt., partly due to dismay about the #Tories continued 'mismanagement' of #Brexit & partly to try and get inside the party's #greentransition policy, firms have oversubscribed the party's #business summit.

The left of the party will see this as a further sign of the party's drift rightwards, for pragmatists this looks like a good sign?

If you think (rightly) that any real attempt to meet #netzero requires a major element of #publictransport then the plight of the UK's cities is indicative of our coming failure to effect anything that might plausibly look like a #greentransition.

The questions are:

how can we reverse decades of under-investment & car-focussed policies in the time we have left to have any chance of ameliorating the #ClimateCrisis?

and can our creaking #bus system take up the slack?

It does not look good!

The #IPPR rightly follows Marianna Mazzucato & suggests that UK Govt. needs to invest directly in #greentehcnology;

as I've said before this make perfect sense; not only would it help accelerate the #greentransition, it would also pump-prime the UK's current lamentable #investment environment for #manufacturers...

Its a policy that the Labour Party should get behind.... its certainly a better use of #taxpayers money than subsidising #fossilfules (see earlier post)

The limits on UK economic development & the #GreenTransition caused by the #nationagrid's inefficiency in adding capacity & connectivity for #renewableenergy is continuing to move up the political agenda....

At some point the management structure & ownership profile of the National Grid will start to be identified as the key problem...

Another case for (re) nationalisation?

If we're serious about responding to the #climatecrisis then we need to do things differently....

A key aspect of the #GreenTransition will be the move away from #meat & towards a larger share of #plantbased food in our diets... however, this message is being compromised by the lobbying of #animal farmers.

The vast majority of Govt. #farming & #agricultural support across the US & Europe goes to animal based farming.

Seems this is one more area where action on #climatecrisis is being sacrificed on the altar of immediate commercial interest(s).

The German government passed the budget for its flagship climate and transformation fund (KTF) on Wednesday (9 August) to accelerate the green transition by providing €212 billion to various projects in building renovation, decarbonisation and the industry between 2024 and 2027.

As #China continues to expand its domination of #cleantech, from the refining of necessary #minerals for #batteries to the production of #solarpanels & cells, increasingly anyone interested in #renewableenergy & the #GreenTransition will need to think about how they feel about such a dependence on #Chinese economic relations.

The next bump-in-the-road for #renewableenergy may be the (projected) shortage of high voltage cabling that will be needed to expand the #electricity inter-connecter network round #Europe.

While the EU (but now less so the UK under the #Tories) has ambitious #greenenergy targets, the infrastructure demands currently look to exceed the manufacturing capacity of these vital cables.

The Q. is will (like the chip shortage) be a temporary glitch or a longer term brake on the #GreenTransition?
