Just updated my visualization of changes in land ice mass as observed by GRACE(-FO) satellite in #Antarctica (left) and #Greenland (right) ๐ง๐
Methods can be found at https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/ice-sheets/. The animation version can also be downloaded at https://zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-ice-figures/.
Icebergs coming out of the Icefjord into Disko Bay from Ilulissat glacier in West Greenland. At the end you can see where the sill (bump on the sea floor) is at the mouth of the fjord where all the big icebergs are getting stuck. #icebergs #icefjord #glacier #greenland

About a month back, there was a big-deal announcement about how the retrieval of soil from under the Greenland ice sheet showed that much of it melted during the last interglacial, ~416,000 year ago, when conditions weren't as warm as fossil fuel burning is about to make them.
This is the story of how that soil was retrieved:

Building, testing and installing sea level GNSS-IR monitoring instruments here for the last few days with help from a great team from #ClimateNarratives and #mcgill. Connecting with the local community here in Ilulissat has been key with this work. The instrument is up and running with a beautiful ocean view for observing sea level changes and ocean tides in Disko Bay from #Ilulissat #Greenland. Looking forward to sharing the results with scientists and community members. #OpenScience

Petermann Glacier is a magnificent outlet glacier Greenland and it drains about 4% of the ice sheet.
The title says it all: in spite of what you might have heard, it's not growing. If you're interested in finding out how we know it's not, even though some people think it might be and what is likely next for this glacier, read on.

Hello Monday! ๐
We're starting our week with a visually beautiful but worrisome view of meltwater ponds in #Greenland๐ฌ๐ฑ, as seen by #Sentinel2๐ช๐บ๐ฐ๏ธ on 26 June
Greenland is going through a record ice cap melting episode

Man the #Sentinel1 images of NW #Greenland look *cool*
(Sentinel 1 is an #ESA radar satellite - so it can see through clouds, but the images are in black and white)

The East GRIP coring has hit the base of the NEGIS ice stream of the Greenland Ice Sheet, finding the glacier is underlain by mud, thus confirming the role of sediment deformation in its dynamics. Undoubtedly this was challenging to pull off, considering the glacier is flowing several centimeters per day. #Greenland #Glacier #IceSheets https://news.ku.dk/all_news/2023/07/pay-dirt-for-ice-core-scientists-in-east-greenland-as-they-reach-bedrock/

About that ice covering much of #Greenland
Now you see it, now you don't.

It looks like much of #Greenland melted around 400,000 years ago, at temperatures not so different from those today.

#Greenland #IceSheet Univ. of Vermont: "Greenland melted some 416,000 years ago, shows high risk of causing sea level rise today" https://phys.org/news/2023-07-greenland-years-high-sea-today.html
Interestingly persistent #melt across #Greenland - still very high and widespread. Some fresh snow and rain damping the #Ice loss slightly.
The accumulated mass budget is close to average for the time of year, which is extraordinary given the huge amount of late snow. The high melt this year has burnt through it over a week...

The ongoing high melt conditions in #Greenland has also hastened* the demise of the seasonal #SeaIce. At our field site in NW near #Qaanaaq, @esa 's #Sentinel2 captured this gorgeous image yesterday...
*Worth emphasising that it is quite normal for sea ice to break up and melt at this time of year in this location.

This is a cool comparison...
The #Greenland #IceSheet melt season in 2023 so far looks spookily similar to 2012.
#SurfaceMassBalance #icesheet #Greenland
Another very high melt day.
Interestingly this year's extreme melt is occurring on exactly the same days of the year as one of the highest extreme melt events previously recorded, in 2012. A few comparisons from #Greenland in 2012 and 2023.

Extremely high melt rates across the #Greenland ice sheet as visualised on @polarportal also illustrate #ShiftingBaselineSyndrome for #Glaciologists.
Even 10 years ago this would have been almost unprecedented, and 20 years ago virtually unthinkable.
Now it's just what happens in Greenland in July...
