In #ODnD’s Men & Magic, I think to recognize #Gygax’s prose in this adored line: “When this task is completed the participants can then be allowed to make their first descent into the dungeons beneath the ‘huge ruined pile, a vast castle built by generations of mad wizards and insane geniuses’” (5-6).

I always wondered why “huge ruined pile” and its description are in quotes. I wonder if Gygax was quoting Arneson…?

Maybe we’ll never know; doesn’t really matter; just wondering aloud.

From yesterday’s #Dungeon23 “69. Locked Storeroom,” the Old-School Award goes to all those who guessed GNOLLS. The “barrel of exceptionally fine ale” is from Dungeon Module B2 The Keep on the Borderlands, cave “J. Gnoll Lair,” room 48 (21). #Gygax’s ale “is so good, in fact, that there is a 5 in 6 chance per taste that [a PC] will draw a healthy draught and then spend the next 1-4 turns drinking.” He might have at least given us a saving throw.

Every time I say #OSR, I cringe.

Based on the works of bigoted, shallow people like #Gygax and others, worse[1].

I should start to only use hashtag #NuSR to distance from all that cringe.
