📌 A 56 yr woman, with multiple underlying conditions, has died from H3N8 bird flu. No close contacts of the case developed an infection at the time of reporting.
📌 H3N8 is known to have been circulating since 2002. It is known to infect horses, dogs and seals.
📌 “It appears that this virus does not have the ability to spread easily from person to person, and the risk of it spreading among human is considered to be low”

China has reported a fatal human case of #H3N8 bird flu, only the 3rd known case ever. Virus was found in a wet market where the woman spent time before falling ill. WHO currently assesses the risk of human2human spread of this virus to be low.
Under the International Health Regulations, countries must report human infections with non-human #flu strains within 24 hrs of detection. In this case WHO was informed 24 days after the woman was hospitalized & 11 days after her death.
