Can anyone tell me what "Papa Radio Lima" means at the end of a phone transmission that I heard several times by different operators during a contest ? Like "You're 5 9 Papa Radio Lima". #SSB #HF #hamradio

Tuned my 10m #dipole after cleaning up the feed point and 1:1 choke. Pretty darn happy with these numbers, although I’d like that impedance at 28.350 MHz to be a smidge higher. #HF #Antennas

So is the change in propagation for 10m and the drop in MUF for #HF in the northeast and northern U.S. + Canada over the past week or two a seasonal thing, a short-term solar cycle thing, or just randomness? #HamRadio

A multiband #HF antenna I am considering for my home station is an off-center fed #dipole. My visceral reaction to a commercial option for one was "OK, but I know enough so far that I think I could build the same thing out of better materials for half the price."

Hey fabulous operators in the northern mid -atitudes: how do you set up your HF wire antennas so that they don’t collapse in this kind of heavy, late season wet #Snow? Pretty sure that the million-year long era of dry, white, fluffy snow in New England is over.

Update: This bag isn't quite big enough for the radio + a 6ah Bioenno battery / shack-in-a-compact bag setup I'm aiming for with the #XieguG90; it's a tight fit and I worry about the battery and other bits getting bashed around while in my backpack.

But I think I have found a cheap but well-constructed replacement after obsessively looking at bags online for a week. Will post photos of the new one when I get it and if it works. Stay tuned... #HamRadio #HF #SOTA #POTA

TY everyone for the portable #HF rig advice! For #XieguG90 folks: what are your favorite #PowerSupply options for 20 & 10W? Both for #SOTA & AC--> DC for a home station? I realize this rig will be a 🚢⚓️ for SOTA but am trying to keep it as light as reasonable.

Trying to research it, & have some ideas (i.e., BioEnno) but am overwhelmed w/ the options + considerations. E.g.: CW vs. SSB can bake a switching power supply if one isn't careful in choosing?. #HamRadio #NewHam

So if you were a shiny new ham, which would you choose as your 1st portable #HF rig for #SOTA/#POTA? The venerable #YaesuFT817 or the #XieguG90?

Heavily leaning towards the G90 but try to convince me why I’d want to choose the 817 instead.

Arguments based solely on country of origin will get you blocked with a swiftness.

Fascinating. Now that I am using higher quality coax (RG8U) for my feed line, my 16” #planardisc antenna very much outperforms MLA-30+ on #rx down to 160m w/r/t SNR and noise floor. It’s wild, especially given that it isn’t really supposed to perform a great on #HF with that disk size.

Picked up 24” piece of scrap sheet steel from the dump. As soon as I find another 24 inch piece of sheet metal, going to build another planar disc see if it performs even better in HF.

What low-cost pocket #HF rig would folks recommend to a new ham with a general license for #SSB & #CW on #SOTA/#POTA? I was looking at #(tr)uSDX / #truSDX as an option but some folks say, that while it is delightful rig, it might be rather frustrating for a new ham. Would love an #elecraftkx2 but it will take quite a while for me to save up for one. I plan on portable #EFHW or dipole variations for antennas. #HamRadio
