Out of the 13 spectrographs that participated in the worldwide campaign:
- 1 got clouds and did not observe
- 1 got a serious damage on the primary mirror and is off for a couple months
- 11 secured data

2 weeks ago, we were observing the rare transit of the #exoplanet #HIP41378 f. It was one of the largest ground-based observing campaign on an exoplanet so far.
Today, we did our first #zoom call with the PIs (Principle Investigators) of the spectroscopic data, in order to decide the strategy for data reduction, analysis and #publication. Another zoom is schedule later this week for the photometric campaign.
The data are so great that we believe we have room for 4+ #papers.

If you want to get some news on the #HIP41378 system that I observed last weekend, you shall follow @sgrouffal.
She is doing a #PhD thesis with me on the #PLATO space mission from the European #Space agency #ESA. She is also working on the analysis of exquisite data of #HIP41378 taken with the very large telescope #VLT, in #Chile.
She is also the artist who produced this great #video of the system ๐คฉ

#Introduction! Hello, I am a first year Ph.D. student at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille #LAM. I am working on #exoplanets detection and characterization. During my Ph.D. I will work on the #PLATO mission and some very interesting planetary systems like #HIP41378!

Wow, this campaign on #HIP41378 f has been incredible ! I can tell you it's a great success. I am receiving many emails from colleagues across the #world reporting me they managed to observe the #transit. Now will start the long process of reducing / analysing / publishing the data.
Stay tuned.
I hope you enjoyed being informed about this campaign.
Next rendez-vous with #HIP41378 is planned for early January, with the transit of planet d that will be observed by #CHEOPS ๐ฐ๏ธ .

@AlexSanterne Merci pour l'explication et la petite simulation. Je viens d'apprendre quelque chose ๐ est ce qu'un spectre de transmission d'#HIP41378 a รฉtรฉ tentรฉ durant le transit ?
The #Rossiter-#McLaughlin effect is also called the spectroscopic transit. Since the #star is rotating, one side is coming towards us and is blue-shifted while the other side is moving away from us and is red-shifted. As the planet is crossing the stellar disk, it blocks a part of the blue-, then red-shifted part. The Rossiter-McLaughlin is a radial velocity anomaly during transit.

Very preliminary plot of the #HARPS-N radial-velocity data of #HIP41378 f obtained last night with the #TNG at #LaPalma.
It shows the #Rossiter-#McLaughlin effect that is clearly detected and in phase with the photometric ingress.

Just woke up from a crazy #night observing #HIP41378 with so many instruments. Quick updated status (from what I just red):
- photometry: so far it seems only @hubble86 got a good weather during the expected ingress ๐ค
- spectroscopy: data from #CARMENES / #CalarAlto, #HARPS-N / #TNG & #ESPRESSO / #ESO are in my mailbox. โ
No news yet from the US-based observatories (and India who haven't started observing yet).
We are still IN TRANSIT.

Good news ! after some fear because of strong wind, @JuliaVSeidel, is currently observing #HIP41378 with #ESPRESSO / #ESO-#VLT. Below is the view of the star (in orange) in the VLT focal plane entering the fiber feeding the light to the spectrograph.
I also got good news from #CalarAlto where they managed to observe the target under very good and stable #conditions.
I am not aware of a transit detection in photometry over Europe yet. Weather wasn't great for photometry.

The night is getting to its end over #Europe. Here is the status of the #HIP41378 f campaign so far:
- #HauteProvence observatory: we got ONE (likely out-of-transit) spectrum through a hole in the clouds
- #CalarAlto: all-sky camera showed stars all the night. I've not heard back from the observatory yet, but it looks good
- #LaPalma had lot of cirrus passing. Likely a killer for photometry, but OK for spectroscopy. ๐ค
Now, it's time for #ESO to start the show !

We are observing from the #HauteProvence observatory !!!!
Conditions are sub-nominal, but at least we are collecting photons. Let's hope for the best. ๐ค
