More than 180,000 people on low incomes were fined for not filing a tax return last year, even though they received so little that they had no tax to pay in the first place.
Many of these, already in severe financial difficulties, misunderstood the initial fine & were then subjected to further fines & interest.

Until 2011, a late-filing penalty would be cancelled if, once a tax return was filed, there was no tax to pay, but the Tory govt changed this.

I watched PMQs today, and, as usual, Stephen Flynn destroyed PM Sunak.

After Sunak didn't answer a question regarding Nadhim Zahawi's use of a Gibraltar-based company to hold his shares in YouGov and subsequent HMRC fine, Flynn fired back by asking the PM:

"Is it little wonder the people in Scotland may well just consider the Tory party to be a parcel of rogues?"

I think the same at this point every year...but do #HMRC honestly expect the financial rogues to just fess up and say, ‘you know what, yes I have been using the odd one or two tax avoidance schemes’.

Would an HMRC that wasn’t financially constrained by the #Tories perhaps probe a little deeper?

Adam, do you share my suspicion that the #Sunak #seatbelt incident was a deliberate attempt to distract from the latest #Zahawi revelation? It got the media talking about something other than the reports that #Zahawi paid a penalty to #HMRC over his tax affairs.

What were #HMRC doing all the time that this alleged #Tax anomaly was going on?

I've been good and done my tax return really early..but never fails to amaze me how sh*t #HMRC website is.. they now allegedly offer 3 easy ways to pay but two didn't work so ended up having to set up a direct debit to pay them.. #SelfAssessment #Tax
