A throwback (tootback?!) to a recent archival hunt in Paris. This is (the copy of) a #1791 #passport issued by the #enslaved insurgents during the #HaitianRevolution. They swore an oath of allegiance to Spain through the Archbishop of #SantoDomingo. The heart with a flame presumably represented the Heart of Mary, but maybe some #arthistorians out there can chime in? I also think that “MDM” may possibly stand for “Maria Dei Mater”, and “MN” for “Mater Nostra”. No certainties, though. The sketch is included in an eye-witness testimony to give the French information on the insurgents.

Today, we try to remember that while many (most?) of the insurrectionaries who launched the #HaitianRevolution fought to end the slave system as a whole, many (most?) of the slaves who joined at first were just demanding longer weekends, which they believed the king of france had granted them.

"A troop of nearly 2,000 slaves went from plantation to plantation, killing whites, burning houses, and setting cane fields alight. ... 'The fire, which they spread to the sugarcane, to all the buildings, to their houses and ajoupas [huts], covered the sky with churning clouds of smoke during the day, and at night lit up the horizon with aurora borealis that projected far away the reflection of so many volcanoes, and gave all objects a livid tint of blood.'" #HaitianRevolution

Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the role of the Haitian Revolution in helping to shape Jose Marti's writings on the social, political and economic conditions in Cuba during its wars of independence. The first chapter examines some of the similarities and differences between these two events (the Haitian Revolution and Cuba's independence wars) and the impact of the Haitian Revolution on Cuba during its wars of independence. The second chapter analyzes some of Marti's political essays and shows how Marti, throughout his works, mentions Haiti as an example not to be emulated. He stresses his desire for Cuba not to become another Haiti and proposes ways for Cuba to avoid the fate of Haiti. The final chapter studies Cuba's political, economic and social environment in the years following Marti's death and establishes whether or not Cuba did indeed accomplish Marti's wish of Cuban independence.
