A guide to digital voice on ham radio
My companions for the evening. QSOs tonight on Tevel-3, RS-44, and JO-97. Getting better at manipulating all of the variables for linear transponder operation and getting the tracking pretty well tuned. (Gpredict on Raspberry Pi tucked behind the IC-705 with the battery.) #amsat #AmateurRadio #HamRadio

Well. Interesting. Probably old news to y'all, but I'd never before had anything that could do anything on 160m, so I knew absolutely bupkis about the band.
All day long, nothing.
Then, after the greyline went by, & it's dark out, li'l green pins all over the US map... so long as they're also in the dark. Fascinating contrast to other bands.
I've now actually had my 1st 160m contact on FT8!
The silly shorty 160m vertical (at a mere 50' tall), works (to some meager extent)!

I’m Luke. I enjoy experimenting with radio and electronics. Mostly active at the moment on satellites and activating/hunting POTA. Recently got interested in VHF grid chasing and went from 1 confirmed grid to VUCC on 6m in right at 30 days. Now working to get satellite VUCC. Other interests are QRP, digital (data and voice modes), microwave networking, kit building, microcontrollers, repeater building, and basically anything else I haven’t tried before. #AmateurRadio #HamRadio #introduction

I guess I lied… got a 2nd wind. Got the 1st crack at it up in the air. Due to reach (rope not long enough), I have a LOT of fold-back at the top; probably 8’ or so. This turns out good, as its best tune is 2.15MHz, just a hair above the 160m band. Close enough that rig’s internal tuner can work with it at 1.996, where it’s now CW beaconing @ 15W. Let’s see if anyone hears it overnight.
Huh… when I started the work to bring down the telescoping mast, I did so because it was calm & overcast.
By the time I was hoisting it back up (about 4x as difficult), the clouds cleared out, & I was standing in full sun, battling gusty winds.
But dammit, I got it back up, with the rope & pulley back up top. Work on the shorty 160m vertical experiment may resume. But not until probably tomorrow. Right now, I’m spent.

Finally ordered a bunch of Mix 31 and 43 toroids and some #12 Teflon wire to make some K9YC-style 1:1 baluns/chokes, and try my hand at a M0UKD 9:1 transformer design.
I am curious about having a EFRW antenna on hand, inspired by wanting to activate W1/MB-001 and similar summits; where a mast plus dipole is possible but too conspicuous during tourist season.
Also for dense tree cover and as a temporary measure at my QTH until I can get some sort of permanent doublet set up.

(Un) screwing my courage to the sticking place.
Wanted to see what whoever added the 3 pin Australian plug to my power supply had done with ground. It’s wired to the chassis, which is what I’d hoped.
Obligatory dad joke: Shocker. (I can’t help myself.) #hamradio
'Chasing #SOTA via a Remote Station'
"This might stir some controversy. It is allowed to chase SOTA via a remote station. I always make sure to say that I'm chasing via remote so there's no confusion for the activator about where I am chasing from. Here I work K7ATN on two SOTA summits in the Portland, OR area.
Thank you to NR7Y for maintaining and giving access to his remote station in Beaverton."
