'Books - where if people suffered, they suffered in beautiful language, not in monosyllables, as we did in Kansas.'

Aaron Douglas, 'Aspiration' (1936)

"Aspiration," created for the Texas Centennial of 1936, conveys the artistā€™s perception of a link between African/Egyptian and African American culturesā€”rejecting European claims to Egyptā€™s historical legacy.

Go Slow

GoĀ slow,Ā they say-
while the bite
Of the dog is fast.
GoĀ slow,Ā I hear-
While they tell me
You can't eat here!
You can't live here!
You can't work here!
Don't Demonstrate! Wait!-
While they lock the gate.
Am I supposed to be God,
Or an angel with wings
And a halo on my head
While jobless I starve to dead?
Am I supposed to forgive
And meekly live
Going slow, slow, slow,
Slow, slow, slow,
Slow, slow,
Slow,
Slow,
Slow?
????
???
??
?

Today in History April 27, 1882: Jessie Redmon Fauset was born. She was an African-American editor, poet, essayist, novelist, and educator. Her emphasis on portraying an accurate image of African-American life and history inspired literature of the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s. In her fiction, she created black characters who were working professionals. This was inconceivable to white Americans at the time. Her stories dealt with themes like racial discrimination, "passing", and feminism. From 1919 to 1926, she was literary editor of The Crisis, a NAACP magazine.

Harlem Renaissance blues singer, pianist, and entertainer Gladys Bentley (1907-1960) openly flouted the gender and sexuality constraints of the 1920s and 30s. The star performer at Harry Hansberryā€™s Clam House in the 1920s and the Ubangi Club in the early 1930s, she was famous for performing in male drag and singing raunchy songs in a deep, growling voice about her female lovers while flirting with women in the audience.

Jones is one of my favorite artists of all times. Iā€™ve gone out of my way to see exhibits of her work. Every one of her eras/phases effects me & I appreciate every one individually and contextually. My bet on whatā€™s going onā€”cat(s) were one of her emotional supports. The picture is posed, the closeness is real. The work she did was amazing & could be very emotionally heavyā€¦draining mvmagazine.com/news/2014/11/11

One of my favorite discoveries while contributing to is the poem "The Word of an Engineer" by James Weldon Johnson. Here's a snippet that's as relevant as ever since Johnson wrote it almost a hundred years ago...

And so we ride
Over land and tide,
Without a thought of fearā ā€”
Man never had
The faith in God
That he has in an engineer!

I just realized I havenā€™t done an intro yet. Sorry, I just kind of launch into things and forget that kind of stuff sometimes. Iā€™m a father and husband from the Midwest. Iā€™m very into specifically and Iā€™ll likely share a lot of funny things my kids say and various pics and videos of whatever my current hyperfixations are.

Langston Hughes had a pet monkey heā€™d gotten on his travels around the Horn of Africa. If I remember right, the monkeyā€™s name was something like ā€œJimbo.ā€ His mama didnā€™t like it. His step dad thought it was cool and took him to the local pool hall a few times in order to show off. One day the monkey shit on a pool table. Hughes had to get rid of the monkey after that.
