Whilst we're on the austerity kick, let's not forget the punitive bedroom tax. It has nothing to do with saving money and everything to do with punishing the least well off, for example, my total rent for my 3 bed council property is easily £100 less than the rent in a 1 bedroom property. I know this because my son lives in one!
