@bps_artish I have taken the liberty of copying your article as a repost. Here it is

Surprisingly thoughtful article about in the UK.
The storyline has stopped being about "5x as efficient" (which most are not) and started to be about "3x as efficient" which most are. It's also pointing out that as gas is roughly 1/3rd of the cost of electicity, an electric heat pump will still cost a much to run as a gas boiler. so they won't reduce your fuel bills. And you may have to do significant work on an existing system to make it more efficient as heat pumps only produce low grade (low temperature) heat, such as INCREASING the size of your radiators, and improving your standard of insulation (both of which are beneficial to gas boilers or heat pumps).
So the key to widespread implemention is decoupling the cost of electricity from the cost of gas, which is wholly in the government remit, and is the reason energy companies are making HUGE amounts of profits while many struggle.
 will pay off.

As it's been getting colder, the heat-pump hasn't been keeping me as warm as I'd like.

The I remembered something the installer said (about 15 months ago) about cleaning the filters every three months or so. Yesterday, I pulled the filters and gave them a good vacuuming until all the dust caking them was gone.

This morning, the heat pump is doing a much better job of keeping me warm, despite it being 4 degrees colder outside.

Canary: "Heat pumps sold so fast in Maine, the state just upped its target." Back in 2019, 'Maine embraced heat pumps as part of its climate strategy, setting a goal to install 100,000 of the machines by 2025.' But Maine Governor Janet Mills (D) just announced the state had surpassed that target 2 yrs ahead of schedule—so the state has set a new goal: installing another 175,000 heat pumps by 2027. “Our transition to heat pumps is creating good-paying jobs, curbing our reliance on fossil fuels, and cutting costs for Maine families, all while making them more comfortable in their homes — a hat trick for our state.” Rocky Mountain Institute published an analysis finding "that heat pumps can generate less than a tenth of the emissions of gas furnaces over their lifetime, depending on the state." One Maine family with a newly installed heat pump 'paid a total of $1,000 to heat their home between November 2021 and April 2022, while using an oil furnace during the same time span would have cost them $3,000.' There are rebates from the Inflation Reduction Act as well as one of $1500 from the state of Maine. I don't usually make company recommendations, but "Standard, Daikin, Fujitsu, Mitsubishi Electric and Samsung make the models that most commonly qualify for the rebates." Maine is one of our coldest states: in February a cold snap hit the state with some of its iciest temperatures seen in half a century, with windchills 'fell below -60˚F.' And I always emphasize that with the flip of a switch, heat pumps push heat out of the house instead, so air conditioning in the summer is part of the package.

@hackernews according to this pdf are cheaper that gas at COP higher than 2.6. But that's the best cop of the graph. As outside temperatures drops below 0°C COP drops well below 1.8, making heat pumps quite more costly than gas when you need it the most
