Just a reminder ... heat pumps are not new technology.

We've known how to build heat pumps as long as we've known how to build refrigerators (hint: they're the same thing).

We could've been switching over to heat pumps, en masse, back in the '80s.

It took Russia invading the Ukraine (twice) for people to jump on this technology.

Will a heat pump work in my region's climate? How low can it go?

While older homes can benefit from the addition of insulation, McDiarmid said it's unlikely homeowners will add enough to justify a smaller heat pump system.

"Delaying installing the heating system because you're planning to do upgrades, in most cases… won't make sense," she said. "When the furnace is getting old, that's when you should be replacing it."

🇬🇧|Habeck's plans could be thwarted by an refrigerant ban. Compared to what is used in heat pumps as refrigerant, is a joke. Stop hysteria and return to common sense immediately! merkur.de/wirtschaft/kaeltemit

@amaditalks That's awful. If you have to replace it, consider an electric : efficient heating and cooling in one appliance, with no fossil fuels.

I had a dream I was at a neighborhood association meeting and they were up in arms because someone was installing a to heat their house and the association was trying to ban them because they’re ugly”, but really the heads of the association were employed by oil companies. Was weird as hell.

"Heat Pumps are a reliable technology ... Everyone has heat pumps in their homes already because they have a fridge...we know that people go into air conditioned offices or shops. We see heat pumps all the time and suddenly there's an uncertainty that they work in people's homes. We need to get that certainty and move forward with it."
A nice wee film re Heat Pumps from Olly Zanetti at Nesta.

@tydalforce The heat pumps are far less cost effective than current air to air (or air to water hot water heater) technology. Installers are overcharging for these days, but overcharging or not, drilling wells or excavating for geothermal is not cost-competitive. And your propane — the most expensive heat per BTU, and bad all around.

Insulating homes is the best way to lower bills and tackle climate change. With a properly insulated home and a heat pump we could save £712. @Jeremy_Hunt your Spring Statement must protect people and planet! act.gp/3lIvDBS

Wondering whether to let an air source run and suck in snow during a heavy storm, or if it's better to turn it off and burn oil during the heavy snow event? Any geeks with an informed opinion? I read a study that moderate use of the defrost cycle uses like 5% or 7% extra energy (it seemed like a good study, but I didn't save it). But in heavy snow it will be freezing solid over and over.

My makes a flushing noise 2-3 times a minute, for hours (hundreds of times a night). I think this is the defrost cycle, but I don't think it should be happening that often. I've asked three HVAC contractors about it: two spent hours trying to fix it and couldn't, and the one who installed it treats me like I'm crazy. Anyone else have this issue?

January Home stats from

Most of January has been fairly mild, so energy usage is down on average to 35kWh a day. With a more sun that has brought our average cost down to 15p/kWh.

When you consider that the produces multiple times the input energy in heat, heating our home is considerably cheaper than it would be with gas.

Very happy with 71% energy from low carbon sources, including heating. Change it possible!
