If you're familiar with #EasternHemlock #forests then you might picture them as a closed #canopy with sparse vegetation in the #understory.
But when a fallen tree opens up that canopy, the #gap supports a profusion of #regeneration.
Very cool to find this understory #heterogeneity at #RBWinterStatePark in #Pennsylvania.
