Still enjoying the Hi-Fi VHS mixtape I made last summer. I haven't noticed any degradation in quality yet, even after playing the tape a lot of times. The music still sounds fine on 99,5% of the tape, as if I just had recorded it.

After hours and hours, I'm still amazed by the sound quality that HiFi VHS delivers when playing music! The latest recording is on a cassette which is so old that the white plastic parts have become beige. It may be manufactured in the late 1980s. But it is the best HiFi VHS recording so far: "CD quality" with only two very short distortions.
If you have the chance, try out the HiFi VHS sound! You need a 6-head HiFi VCR and at least one VHS tape.

Finally I have the control head of my Hi-Fi VHS recorder adjusted correctly so that it will not produce humming on Hi-Fi audio recordings due to the linear audio track being put over the main (helical scan) area of the tape.
The problem that using the reverse scan function is folding the tape after a few seconds is another problem, but a minor one for audio recordings.

Recording classical music onto tape - the ultimate challenge for the hardware and the tape itself. But I'm cheating by recording onto a VHS (with HiFi audio) instead of a compact cassette. If all works well, it should sound like the CD I'm recording from.

Old and busted: Mixtape auf Compact Cassette.
New hotness: Mixtape auf VHS.

It is a good idea to test VHS tapes first before recording HiFi audio on them, because not all tapes are fit for HiFi recordings in LP mode. To test them, record 5 songs on different (more or less equally distributed) positions on the tape and listen back to them to see if the tape performs well in LP mode. If the HiFi audio tracks are played back without big distortions then the tape is fine for recording music onto it.

Now that the Hi-Fi VHS recorder is repaired, I can continue putting hours of music onto VHS tapes: In long play mode, 8 hours will fit on a common E-240 cassette. That sure is a lot of music to put into a compilation, but it's doable.
And while I'm writing this, I'm listening to a VHS tape and enjoy the (almost) CD quality of the Hi-Fi VHS recording đ
