Something some of the brightest people I know seem to not entirely get:

Having spaces where masking is required in order to be universally accessible is CONSISTENT WITH having other spaces where masking is optional because the space is optional. It's not prima facie ridiculous to mask in one space just because you didn't have to in another; in fact, the opposite.
