Most people in the UK don’t know that The Highway Code has a section for pedestrians that even specifies what side of the pavement they should walk on: “Where possible, avoid being next to the kerb with your back to the traffic.” Essentially, this tells us to walk on the left hand side of the pavement in most cases. For some reason, the message doesn’t seem to have gotten out. 😒. #Urbanism #HighwayCode https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/rules-for-pedestrians-1-to-35

This is needed - some drivers have forgotten the need to give 1.5m+ clearance when overtaking cyclists. It would be nice to see proactive campaigns by local Police too.

Another argument for mandatory periodic driver retraining, along with far better ongoing public communications campaigns to get the message out about highway code changes.

A hierarchy of road users doesn't remove the individual responsibility we have for our safety. It simply places greater responsibility on those that pose the greatest risk, which helps to make our roads safer for everyone.

Since the #HighwayCode changes came into effect, #cycling has generally been safer and less stressful (in my experience), until the past month or so. Today, a van #closepassed me on a residential road then turned left, and a taxi close passed and tried to force themselves in front of me at traffic lights and shouted insults. Don't they know I have three cameras? Then again, what do #Hampshire #Police do with the reports anyway?

Pothole season is upon us, so please remember that cyclists may choose to ride in the centre of the lane to avoid hazards in the gutter. The #HighwayCode explains that this road positioning also increases a rider's visibility and ensures drivers overtake safely.

A recent poll revealed that 25% of British adults asked weren't aware of last year's #HighwayCode changes. Of those who were aware, just 28% knew that drivers should leave at least 1.5 metres when overtaking people cycling at speeds of up to 30mph.
Please RT to spread awareness.
@networker_365 Don't drive head on into a bus, or mistakenly think that you are a #bus and you'll be fine. (-:
#AshleyNeal has posted a short video about #driving a motor vehicle in #India. Most of the commenters do not seem to get that in India, as I have directly witnessed, most horn use is actually in line with what the U.K. Highway Code says, to alert other drivers, and _not_ in line with what too many U.K. drivers _wrongly do_ with the horn instead.
Some vehicles even sport signs requesting that people sound their horn if they are overtaking in a blind spot.

I just walked to the local shops. It's well past sunset. A takeaway food delivery cyclist came the other way. At speed. Dressed in black. With no lights. On the pavement.
But singing #Slade's "Merry Christmas Everybody" at the top of his voice to let everyone within half a kilometre know that he was approaching.

@simoncarswell It occurs to me that "Londoner. Jogger. Motorcyclist." must be three different classes of road user in the Highway Code. (-:

Those road users who can do the greatest harm have the greatest responsibility to reduce the danger or threat they may pose to other road users.
