One thing I’ve noticed is that Mastodon also seems to have a much stronger “Follow Back” culture than Twitter did.
So if you follow someone you think is interesting, and they see your profile lists topics they find cool, odds are they’ll give you a follow back!
I’d recommend searching the hashtags for #Iran , #bikers , and #Ukraine first. #hippies didn’t seem to have any activity.
I scoured the #furry and #mastoart tags quite a bit to find some cool folks!
