@RosJ @histodons I'm not very knowledgeable about the history of British historical writing specifically, but for the areas I do know something about (Germany, France), historians used explicit references a lot more in the 17th and early 18th centuries, then gave up on it in the later 18th and 19th. It can be described as a genre shift, having to do with target audiences and intended use of the text. The 19th c. history book was meant to read like a novel, and thus be more accessible and interesting to a wider audience. And yes, that makes them intensely frustrating to use as a research source. #Historiography #HistoryOfHistoricalWriting

I've just been reminded of E. P. Thompson's inspiring words: 'I am seeking to rescue the poor stockinger, the Luddite cropper, the "obsolete" hand-loom weaver, the "utopian" artisan, and even the deluded followers of Joanna Southcott, from the enormous condescension of posterity.' #history #historiography

Today I read Gül Şen's very well-structured and insightful study of an Ottoman chronicle.
"In 'Making Sense of History: Narrativity and Literariness in the Ottoman Chronicle of Naʿīmā', Gül Şen offers the first comprehensive analysis of narrativity in the most prominent official Ottoman court chronicle. As a case study on the literalization of historical material, 'Making Sense of History' provides insights into the historiographical and literary conventions underpinning Naʿīmā’s chronicle and contributes to our understanding of elite mentalities in the early modern Ottoman world by highlighting the author’s use of key concepts such as history and time."

I liked this illustration of the chronicle in question, depicted on a portrait of the Ottoman sultan.

Calling all #ancient #histodons and #antiquidons – I'm #teaching a #hellenistic #history course next term. Does anyone have advice re good sourcebooks (in English translation) and/or textbooks? Looking for a good balance of #historiography and documentary/epigraphic sources. My go-to is Austin's sourcebook with supplemental readings (i.e., modern scholarship), but wondering what else people have enjoyed working with #ancienthistory

@ljsd absolutely—I find it is one of the hardest things for students to grasp about #ancient #roman #historiography in particular. But it makes exploring #ancienthistory all the more fascinating and rewarding (at least in my humble opinion!)

Students in my #romanhistory class were horrified by #sulla but they questioned whether he was really as bad as the #ancient #historians say. I replied that the #historiography paints a specific sort of megalomania; he’s someone who thought he was smarter than everyone, who comes in a breaks something he’s “saving” all in the name of a personal quest for power. Couldn’t help but say “reminds me of someone…” (over yonder on the bird site) #histodons #classics #twittermigration
