So, I’ve been reading Civil War era ladies’ magazines all day, and I found something that surprised me. It’s a kebab recipe from 1863 Philadelphia.

This appeared in the wildly popular periodical Godey’s Lady’s Book, which at this time had 150,000 subscribers all over the States. Curry powder, ghee, ginger, and lemon peel—19th century food wasn’t as bland as you’d think

Hokey-Pokey man and children with their penny-licks. In the 19th century, ice cream vendors sold ices in small, thick-walled glasses. They cost a penny, hence the name ‘penny-lick’. These were usually wiped with a cloth and re-used, and were thus a considerable health hazard, particularly for children. Many died because of infections such as TB or cholera.
