Any #FLOSS #Linux security #camera / #DVR recommendations? I've been using #Zoneminder for years, but I tire of its constant high CPU usage, ancient motion detection algorithms, etc. So far, #Frigate, #iSpy, and #Shinobi look interesting. The #HomeAssistant integration in them is a plus, and #Frigate has ML offload to a TPU (available as a USB dongle) for dramatic reduction in CPU and power usage (and more sophisticated detection; differentiating cars from people, etc.) #AskFedi

Just had a heck of a eureka moment when it comes to my personal home automation stuff.
Finally had to break down and start running the AC now that we're seeing consistent hot and dry weather with temps in the mid to high 80s. Open windows aren't cutting it.
My bedroom has always had poor air circulation. I usually use a window fan propped up over the floor vent to help.
Just came to the realization that I can easily program an automation in HA to turn on a smart plug connected to said fan when the AC is running and shut off when it quits rather than running the fan constantly. Time to toy with this!

I'm on my way to building my own AirGradient https://www.airgradient.com/open-airgradient/kits/ DIY environmental monitoring system.
I'm pretty happy with what I got running in an afternoon.
Hooked up a SenseAir S8 sensor to the serial port on a Raspberry Pi and wrote a small python script to poll it. Then I set up Grafana and InfluxDB. And there we go.

@winterjodi Yeah, that has been one thing that has irritated me about #HomeAssistant . Right now I have it in a VM on my unRAID box but the same gripes there. I wish I could run the whole shebang as a docker container or in a lightweight LXC container but to use the extensions I must use their prebuilt OS. Some people have 'hacked' their way to get it working with unRAID's Docker system but it is very much a hack and I think it has been abandoned to boot.

It just occurred to me that so many plugins might be an issue for Home Assistant on Docker. I need to look into this more.
I've been using docker-compose for years to manage services, but I'm building out my home systems and I'm wondering if people recommend something other than Docker, such as Portainer or Unraid for home use, such as to use with Home Assistant and other "home environment" tools
