For most of the summer there were only 2 hummingbirds in the yard. Now it feels like there are a dozen. Some probably hatched here or nearby, and the rest, I guess, are migrants. I walked through a meadow filled with hundreds, probably thousands of tiny grasshoppers that flung themselves into the air at my approach. I thought this male summer tanager had come for the jelly and I was worried because there were a lot of yellow jackets around the jelly dish. I needn't have worried--it caught a yellow jacket out of the air and ate it.
