No defenseless #animal deserves to be drained of their blood while fully conscious and then be tossed aside, weakened and half alive. The #cruelty must stop now.

Due to the decimation of the horseshoe crabs, conservationists in #Delaware have pitched a proposal for strengthened #protections for #HorseshoeCrabs. The five states harboring the bleeding companies would do well to take note and follow suit.

An investigation by #NPR revealed fishermen collecting the crabs for the bleeding companies showed little concern for their #welfare, with collectors tossing them into boats by the hundreds or picking the crabs up by their tails — in direct contradiction of recommended welfare practices. One of the #BleedingCompanies also has been sued for repeatedly accepting #HorseshoeCrabs unlawfully taken from off-limit islands and from inside a #NationalWildlifeRefuge.

Another year, another great opportunity to teach the session on potassium channels at the ion channel course of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

The campus is also remarkable for its wildlife and I finally got to see some horseshoe crabs.

In recent decades, #overfishing has decimated the horseshoe crab population at Delaware Bay, leading to a sharp decrease in red knots, which are now listed as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. Under the current management program, horseshoe crabs have not recovered, and red knots have continued to decline. Rather than taking steps to reverse this trend, Addendum VIII would open the door to resuming the harvest of female horseshoe crabs, further imperiling red knots and potentially violating the Endangered Species Act.
