got major sunburn sat by the pond watching the bugs but it was worth it (don't be like me and always wear suncream folks)

marmalade hover fly (Episyrphus balteatus), blue emperor (Anax imperator), black tailed skimmer (Orthetrum cancellatum), and tapered drone fly (Eristalis pertinax)

bonus: lots of blue damselflies (Enallagma cyathigerum)

happy belated / (and happy winter solstice for those in the southern hem!) ☀️ 🪴

another hot one in the garden, spent chilling with some friends (l-r: house sparrow, philodromus crab spider [poss. p. aureolus?], salticus zebra spider, and eupeodes hoverfly)

believe it or not, i actually had the most severe arachnophobia when i was younger, but i'm loving learning more about these fascinating creatures!

I'm a bit baffled by this striking nectaring on this morning. I thought at first Volucella pellucens, but the central band doesn't look quite right. Can anyone help? @kitenet

Apologies for the poor-quality phone pic!

First insect of the year for me. Hoverfly Eristalis tenax, enjoying the daphne flowers. I had both male and female in the garden today ( this is a male as eyes close together), these are important pollinators and this chap already has pollen grain on the hairs behind his eyes. Todays adults would have been overwintering in cracks and been woken up by the sunshine. This important species needs water to breed in ( ponds/ditches).

During the summer I love capturing macro photos of the life in my garden. It's just taken using my phone but it's amazing to see it just in my back garden.

The other place often features so let's start it off here as well. This is the spectacular Pocota personata, a trying very hard to make you think it is a - check the antennae for the tell-tale difference. The photo shows my first encounter with this species, from a field trip last spring. This is a fairly rare and elusive whose larvae develop in rot-holes in mature Beech trees.

First post here. Hoverfly Chrysotoxum bicinctum - stupidly I though it stalking the aphid - but adult hovers dont have biting mouth parts. Life cycle of this sp a bit of a mystery, its though larva feed on aphids of the bean root aphid that are farmed by ants.

Hoverfly - not so cuddly.
