Good news is that I went to an AH-MAZING bat talk and bat watch last night at Humboldt Bay Nat'l Wildlife Refuge. Professor from Cal Poly Humboldt was great. Delighted when he melted into glee when describing bats' soft fur. I learned so much and we did see bats!

Sticker seen on the sales counter at a local grow shop in southern Humboldt. Translation: do not sell pounds of cannabis for under $500 or the cannabis cultivators of the tri-county region of northwestern California will not be able to survive financially.

Back in the early 20-teens there were similar stickers that said "25 to survive", meaning $2500 per pound. That was something of a ridiculous joke at that time, because prices had already dropped well below $2000/lb on the "traditional" (illegal) market. This was before legalization, but during the time of virtually unregulated medical use.

We have done modestly well this year at the nursery because prices have come up to the point where many of the small farmers who couldn't afford our plants the past two years have come in and bought large quantities.

The extreme bureaucratization of legal cannabis has driven production costs sky high, so $500/lb truly is a rock bottom minimum.

The other container of old seeds we got was labeled "green giant", which was a well-known variety back in the late '90s. We are trying to germinate them as well. Hopefully it's not too late.

In the hills of Northern California, stuck in baggies and hummus containers and jars, are thousands of varieties of cannabis seeds that no one is growing anymore. We are trying to save some of these, propagate them and re-distribute them to cannabis aficionados who have a soft spot for the old ways.

Technically, bringing seeds like this into the licensed cannabis cultivation system is illegal under the stupidly, pointlessly restrictive cannabis bureaucracy. We don't care. Preserving genetic diversity is more important than some cubicle-dwelling dweeb's little rule.

Abacus! A high CBD variety originally bred by Meadows Medicinals in Southern Humboldt. It has gorgeous purple stems and a unique, pleasant smell that is hard to describe.

The breeder's tests showed virtually no THC and mid-teens levels of CBD, but one of our customers from last year grew it and says it lab-tested at 20% CBD. If you want to grow your own CBD plants, these are very robust and easy to cultivate.

We still have a couple dozen of these left. We also have select high-THC plants on sale till they're gone. All of our plants are in 2-gallon pots and 2' to 4' tall. $60 each includes all taxes.

I finally got around to setting up an account for my "other" business (not photography) @PlantHumboldt

I've always been annoyed that Instagram *barf puke* has been our best advertising venue besides posters and our own mailing list. The greater Bay Area out to Sacramento, the Central Valley and North Bay counties is our natural customer base, so it feels like a logical fit to be here.

I'm really hoping that we can develop enough support here that we can scale down our corporate social media presence.

Today I stopped by and chatted with one of the old timers and original #Humboldt #BackToTheLand-ers and an OG #WeedFarmer.

He gave me these seeds to try to germinate. They are from 2017. He quit cultivating in 2019. These are his personal line that he's been cultivating since he arrived.

They were originally brought to Humboldt by others who made a botanical expedition to Afghanistan in 1976 to bring back so called "Indica" varieties that ripened earlier and would be more suited to Humboldt County's fall rains than the tropical "sativa" varieties people grew from "bag seeds" in weed that came from Mexico or Columbia.

These seeds have a long story. Preserving and spreading these genetics and the stories of the people who cared for them is part of our mission.

We'll be germinating these now and growing some small plants outdoors this summer so we can make fresh seeds and test the finished flower for potency. We hope to offer them as starts to growers next season.

So I wrote this piece about zoo animals trying to pass an anti-shit-throwing resolution.
