After re-reading The Hunt for Red October, I'm on to re-reading Patriot Games. The former (published in 1984) stands up fairly well to the test of time.
Unfortunately, the latter (published in 1987) is littered with stuff, from the depiction of Prince Charles' marriage, through the lax attitude to child gun safety, to terrorism on U.S. soil, that dates very badly indeed. It's the far less enjoyable of the two to read nowadays, as a result.

I re-read the Hunt For Red October novel over the weekend. It's interesting to see where the dialogue for the movie came from, and what things in the movie were _not_ in the novel.
"Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan." isn't in the novel, for example. Nor are "Alright, chief, put us on the roof!" and the bit about politicians kissing babies. But quite a lot of other lines are.
