Some interesting and, to me, entirely agreeable points on office-based and hybrid working as a result of my former colleague's mission to have 100 coffees and chats in 2023.

Here's some interesting research from The Work Foundation looking at #hybridworking & what its advantages & disadvantages are for the differently abled.
While in some ways it can enhance the contribution those with ability-based constraints can make to the workplace... there is also a fear that as the return to the office continues & #workingfromhome becomes less wide-spread, #disabled #workers may miss out on new opportunities by being coded as or allocated to #WFH.

Does the Government now support working from home? I thought the Ruling Party was previously supported by large landowners and developers, both groups complained they were losing income from hybrid working.

'Millions of British workers will have more flexibility over where and when they work as the Flexible Working Bill achieves Royal Assent.'

I've said it before but its worth repeating:
as the UK firms struggle to find a way to maintain #hybridworking and/or the #workingfromhome that many #workers prefer, they're missing a trick if they don't look at (and seek to learn) from the decades of experience in the #university sector.
University academic staff have worked in a hybrid manner for decades; the embedded & tacit knowledge across the sector would be useful to those now seeking to manage this working environment.
Just ask them!

You might have thought #investment banks made their money through recognising innovation & moving ahead of the pack to seize opportunities....
Well, in a bid to turn back the clock on #workingfromhome & #hybridworking, JP Morgan is requiring its senior bankers to be in the office five days a week or face 'corrective action'.
Clearly they cannot be trusted to work from home or anywhere off site.
So, its now clear that it not just us that don't trust #bankers, its their managers too!!

#EnterpriseConnect End-users report:
*#HybridWorking models are still not settled models. Most orgs are still experimenting to find successful formulas.
*RTO is still perceived as just a desire of senior management. MANY spend half-days in nearly empty offices to meet mandate.

I am on-site a couple of days a week for various reasons...
Today I:
(i) saw this sign for a training being held, and checked out what it was
(ii) had an impromptu meeting with someone outside of but associated with a development I am part of - and we had an excellent discussion on needs, implications, expectations, end-use, and more...
These further reminded me I am coming to be very really appreciative of what a hybrid working locations solution in the workplace can bring...

Q. why are #managers less keen on #hybridworking that their staff?
Are they lonely, unable to socialise after work as a way of building team character?
They might tell themselves that, but for much dysfunctional UK #management, I suspect the reduction of their ability to manage via 'micro-aggressions' & bullying by body language may be playing a part... they've managed so long like that they aren't able to see how to manage online when people can just switch them off.

Here's some interesting research from #LinkedIn on the preference for #workingfromhome & #hybridworking among #workers, even as many firms are trying to get people back to the office full-time.
It adds to the suggestion that #lockdown has actually produced a sea-change in people's expectations about how work is organised, while many managers want to return to a majority/full-time physical presence at the #office;
could this be the labour struggle if the decade?

I haven't been a manager for at least a decade, but I did a pretty good job when I was. I always remembered my team were people, and they deserved my attention/support. I'm there for them, not the other way around. Here are some great suggestions for our now #HybridWorking world:
The focus on #hybridworking or #workingfromhome has produced studies that have explored its negative & positive aspects, as well as the intentions & views of #mangers.
What's interesting (I may be wrong) is; while many studies are being undertaken by #university researchers, no major study seems to have explored the long experience of a key group who have been hybrid working for decades.... academics themselves.
There are lessons to be learnt from universities (miss)management of its staff!

This is EXACTLY as I predicted a few years ago. Urban business towers will be converted to mixed use and residences, and those residences will have home offices. It is open and half sold in New York City.

The office purpose and layout must change in order to have value to a majority workforce of knowledge workers that now knows that they are more productive when working remotely. These are dominoes falling:

More resistance to #HybridWorking crumbles: NYC's Mayor Adams is exploring remote option for city workers https://gothamist.com/news/mayor-adams-says-nyc-is-exploring-remote-option-for-city-workers?utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=shared_twitter

The Guardian article says you are more likely to be able to work from home if you are white, but the ONS data (characteristics workbook, worksheet 10) says otherwise. The highest percentages by ethnic group were: Mixed/Multiple (49%) and Other ethnic group (47%). White and Asian were tied on 44%. The only group with a lower % was Black with 34%. It's location and job type which drive the differences. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/feb/14/working-from-home-revolution-hybrid-working-inequalities

Interestingly, according to the ONS, over half of #workers with salaries of over £50k declared themselves to be #hybridworking - given the character of many jobs that earn less, the expansion of #workingfromhome (again) seems to be very much a class-based phenomenon.
Are we becoming a society where the middle-classes often work from home in defensive isolation (linked by virtual means) while the workers who support them toil in the outside world...
All starting to feel a little #dystopian?

I've written about this for years...It's interesting actually watching / hearing me speak about it.
