Georgia: A source of green energy for Europe?

The EU wants to import green electricity from Georgia as part of a move to make the country less dependent on Russia and help the bloc meet its climate targets.

The potential is vast: the Georgian state electricity producer GSE expects to expand capacities from the current 4,600 megawatts (MW) to just under 10,000 MW by 2033.

Over the last week, several European countries had power prices in the wholesale energy market dip into negative values during daylight hours.

The decline in prices was mostly driven by the abundance of available energy generated by renewable sources, combined with the relatively low demand for energy for heating or cooling, caused by normal springtime temperatures.

Finland's average electricity price slips into negative territory.

The oversupply of virtually emissions-free electricity is mainly due to spring flooding, which is super-charging hydropower production.

Usually, negative prices occur at night for shorter periods of time, the novelty of the price dip comes from its length.

For consumers the subzero price means a really affordable price, even after transmission fees.

It appears this protracted and complex transmission line story may be nearing an end.

Despite the wishes of incumbent New England generators that funded a $100 million ballot campaign against the project:
NextEra, Vistra, and Calpine.

A relatively mild winter in Europe helped stave off an energy crisis there this past winter, but the warm weather itself is now threatening the energy system in other ways.

A warm winter with relatively little snow means less water flowing into Europe’s rivers come summer. This will require rethinking nuclear and hydropower production.

‘The hydropower goldrush’: how Europe’s first wild river national park saw off the dams.

At one point, there were 45 dams proposed on the Vjosa, eight on the main river and 37 on its tributaries. By far the largest was the 50m-high Kalivaç hydropower plant, a few kilometres downstream from Queserat village. You can still see the terraces cut into the hills on either side of the river.

The global unused profitable hydropower potential is 5.27 PWh yr−1, two-thirds of which is distributed across the Himalayas. unused profitable is 0.60 PWh yr−1, four times larger than its developed hydropower.

"Renewable energy is on track to produce more energy than coal in the US this year."

"According to figures from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), more than a fifth of all electricity by the end of 2022 will come from hydropower, wind and solar."
