Reading #MaryDouglas Purity and Danger (1966), as you do, and have got to the bit on dietary exclusions in the Old Testament. When I reach the animal #hyrax I realise I have no idea about their distribution, #ecology, place in human culture, and start ecosiaing. They are hervivorous -- and cute! They huddle (poor theormoregulation) and in evolutionary terms they are connected to elephants, mastodons and seacows. They even have tiny tusks. Let's celebrate hyraxes. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyrax
Finally, the Hyrax. These little fellows hang around on rocky outcrops, and their closest living relatives are... Elephants!

A word on my avatar: it's a Rock #Hyrax. Hyrax species are common in the ME and east & southern Africa. They are mentioned in documents from 2,000 years ago, including the Hebrew bible.
While they might look like marmots, they are more closely related to #elephants and, yes, #mastodons. They even have little tusks! They are herbivores with 3 stomachs, and they gain their digestive microbiome as babies by consuming the droppings of the adults.
More hyrax fun:
