Reading Purity and Danger (1966), as you do, and have got to the bit on dietary exclusions in the Old Testament. When I reach the animal I realise I have no idea about their distribution, , place in human culture, and start ecosiaing. They are hervivorous -- and cute! They huddle (poor theormoregulation) and in evolutionary terms they are connected to elephants, mastodons and seacows. They even have tiny tusks. Let's celebrate hyraxes. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyrax

A word on my avatar: it's a Rock . Hyrax species are common in the ME and east & southern Africa. They are mentioned in documents from 2,000 years ago, including the Hebrew bible.

While they might look like marmots, they are more closely related to and, yes, . They even have little tusks! They are herbivores with 3 stomachs, and they gain their digestive microbiome as babies by consuming the droppings of the adults.
