I AM AN IMMIGRANT. I wrote this poem towards the end of last year. It was one of those sudden sparks of inspiration where I knew I had to write a poem starting ‘I am an immigrant’. I lived in the U.K. over 21 years now and I love it. I lived outside of my native country Denmark over 25 (23 years in Denmark). I replanted because I need a different soil…. If you are an immigrant, why did you emigrate?

Amma arrived in the UK in 1977, working for the NHS, and studying for her post-grad qualifications as an Anaesthetist.

Due to the Anti-Tamil riots in 1977, my father, younger brother and I arrived on 6/9/78, piggybacking as Dependents on her Visa. They knew nothing about claiming #asylum .

#Amma served the #NHS for over 30 years. She now lives with Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Every week, our Skype call invokes strong emotions, and reignites my pride to identify as #IAmAnImmigrant
