The flood was triggered by a massive rockslide just below Ronti peak, of ~22 mio m3 of rock mixed with ice and snow

The energy of the fall melted the ice creating the source of flood. This remobilized the debris and ice on the valley floor deposited by previous events, pushed the stream water and created an excessive flood wave.

#ClimateCrisis could have contributed to #landslide in #India that killed 70

The #ICIMOD, which works across eight countries in #Asia, said the tragedy was caused by a massive #rockslide, dismissing speculation that it was triggered by a glacial lake bursting.

In a report released on Friday, the centre wrote that the energy unleashed by the landslide resulted in ice melting. This was compounded by heavy #rainfall in the area a few days before the event.
