This post on #Antarctic #seaIce by @ZLabe is an excellent run-diwn of the current state of knowledge - and the power of saying I don't know! -
I spent several days at #IUGG trying to find someone who did know and eventually concluded that actually noone knows for sure, though there are a lot of interesting ideas...
(And, as Zack says, it's unlikely to be just one thing and more likely to be a complex story)
Yet another #IUGG talk: "Unfortunately, the presenter could not be here due to visa issues". Do better, Europe!
I was asked at #IUGG today about mastodon and how it works. And after launching into a quick overview I remembered this post shared by @drewdevault - I think the distinction between social media and parasocial media is quite helpful.

Great talk by Veronica Tollenaar on #BlueIce areas in #Antarctica that somehow manages to unite meteorites, machine learning, satellite data and the impact of #ClimateChange ..
It turns out that warming temperatures help the #meteorites melt their way into the ice and be lost.

A highlight of the #IUGG23 is the medal lecture of Ricarda Winckelmann on #TippingPoints in #Antarctica.
Great title: when giants falter.

#IUGG some of the presenters have problems answering questions because of language issues. I’m sure they could give an insightful answer in their own language, but I wouldn’t understand. Now we both struggle in our non-native broken English. Time for some simultaneous translators?
Are you at #IUGG #IUGG23?
I am presenting my poster today (the 12th) at 17:00, hall B (poster number JP03p-15).
The title is: Investigating surface buoyancy flux and Ekman transport influence on the Southern Ocean's upper ocean pycnocline stratification.
If you are interested by buoyancy fluxes, Ekman transport, stratification, non-linearities of the EOS, or just curious, come for a chat!
Off to #IUGG this morning to talk #IceSheets #CMIP6 #CMIP7 and #ISMIP7, but stopping by @rahmstorf 's talk on #AMOC #TippingPoints first.
Give me a shout if you're at #IUGG23 this week and want to meet up!

Attending the #IUGG conference in Berlin this week? Tomorrow at 8:30-9:00 is my lecture:
* Is the Atlantic Overturning Circulation approaching a tipping point? *
Hope to see you then in Hall A, room A1, session "The Meridional Overturning Circulation".
On the train platform at #Praha playing spot the scientists...

Today we , the Belgian antenna of the #IUGG organised a get-to-know your community day. A lot of posters from PhD students and early career researchers on geology, atmosphere, ocean, ice shelf, magnetosphere.... Nice to see so many young enthusiasts
