Beethoven wasn’t the only one with dramatic flair 200 years ago—Sagittarius A*, the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole, may have also composed an intense flare as it consumed nearby material.

An article to be published in "The Astrophysical Journal" reports a study on Tycho supernova remnants which offers new information on the geometry of its magnetic fields. A team of astronomers led by Riccardo Ferrazzoli of the Italian National Institute of Astrophysics used observations conducted with the IXPE space telescope to examine the polarized X-rays emitted by these supernova remnants.

An article published in the journal "Nature" reports a study on the blazar Markarian 501, or simply MRK 501, which offers an explanation for the jets of particles emitted at speeds close to the speed of light. A team of researchers used NASA's IXPE space telescope to study Markarian 501 and concluded that shock waves within the jets were the most likely explanation.

#NASA's #IXPE helps solve #blackhole #jet mystery - Some of the brightest objects in the sky are called #blazars. A blazar is especially bright because one of its powerful jets of high-#speed #particles points straight at #Earth. For decades, #scientists have wondered: How do particles in these jets get accelerated to such high #energies?
