How much do melt? And what is driving those melt occurrences? That's the question our latest paper is trying to answer.

A new twist on an older idea: a temperature threshold for
But @jmvanwessem @steflhermitte et al show is key:

Variable temperature thresholds of melt pond formation on Antarctic ice shelves

"For relatively wet ice shelves, the −5 °C temperature threshold was confirmed; but cold + dry ice shelves such as Amery, Ross + Filchner-Ronne are more vulnerable than previously thought, with threshold temperatures well below −15 °C. "

"Researchers have discovered a process that can contribute to the melting of ice shelves in the Antarctic."

"An international team of scientists found that adjacent ice shelves play a role in causing instability in others downstream."

are not just smooth, perfect slabs of floating , but rather contain areas of damaged ice that affect their strength and flow.

Building on previous work, Maaike Izeboud & Stef Lhermitte show how their "NeRD" method can detect different types and scales of damage (e.g. crevasse fields, large rifts, shear zones) in both SAR and optical datasets.

Staying with - I also found I had revisited this super cool paper by the awesome () and Christoph Kittel on the likely futures of the peninsula shelves under different warming scenarios..
tl;dr - limit the warming to save the shelves..
