'Anything short of a complete ban on all whale hunting is immoral'
Everyday Philosophy: Iceland’s whaling ban is flawed
Is hunting whales for their meat any worse than killing pigs for theirs?

Since it is #WorldShorebirdsDay I guess I should post a shorebird image so here's an Eurasian Oystercatcher from my stop in #Iceland earlier this summer.

It looks like this Common Redshank has met a biologist in its past (note the band). Perhaps that's why it was yelling at me. #Iceland

Congratulations to #Iceland #NewZealand #Ireland and the rest in the top 10. I was not expecting to be in there 😂 🍸 :sp_pride: But again, well done and I am happy for you all.
Hello World. A fledgling White Wagtail exploring the big new world. #Iceland
TEMPORARY ban on murdering whales was put in place due to #AnimalWelfare concerns — 40% of hunted whales did not die instantly, with AVERAGE time to death of 11.5 minutes

Iceland to allow whaling again in move branded ‘shameful’ by campaigners https://metro.co.uk/2023/08/31/iceland-whaling-to-resume-in-move-branded-shameful-by-campaigners-19429133/?ico=mosaic_home 🐋 #Whales #Cetaceans #MarineMammals #Whaling #AnimalWelfare #AnimalCruelty #Iceland

This is a disgrace:
https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/aug/31/iceland-allows-whaling-to-resume-in-massive-step-backwards
> #Iceland allows whaling to resume in ‘massive step backwards’
> Activists say that whales will still suffer agonising deaths despite new regulations and monitoring
> “With the need for whale protection so critical, this is a devastating rejection of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to end the slaughter at sea. There is a new shameful entry in the conservation history books – Iceland had a chance to do the right thing and it chose not to.”
Mother of Thyme (Thymus praecox) added a splash of color at several stops in #Iceland
In the interest of honesty and completeness I would like to add to this list of valid complaints, in fact.
"Reykjavík" means "Smoky Bay", and yet the weather this summer was mostly sunny and clear — really undermining the ambiance, destroying mood, and generally degrading the expected experience.
Also, summer sunsets in #Iceland are simply too long. One ends up taking dozens of photos of a single sunset, and then spends hours trying to select one or two to keep.
Would not recommend.

Oh my… @morquessewen alerted me to this amazing piece of travel writing:

As a person living in #Iceland, I feel compelled to respond.
> On a recent trip, I found sites like Rainbow Street and Seljalandsfoss packed with tourists.
This indeed is a problem, turns out tourists like touristy sites. 🤔
> The summertime midnight sun was beautiful, but it also made it difficult for me to sleep.
And then in the winter the dark nights help with sleep, but no midnight sun! 😢

I was listening to the great Criminal podcast on the drive into the hospital this morning, specifically the latest episode:

The smoke from our North American #wildfires is reaching #Iceland.
What about all the animals across the Northern Hemisphere that can't breathe properly right now? What about their respiratory systems, their internal organs, their babies who are suffering and dying?
What is this all going to look like when it's over? Who will inform us about it? What reporters should we read? Let's make a list!
