One of the least fun things about learning a new language is when you're driving around and see a sign and it's like "Giesenkirchen" which is directly translated as Pour Church or Hundsrück ( EN Dog Back )

and you ask what it is they are pouring or if the hills look like Dog backs and all the Germans have no idea because it or it's just a "proper noun".

What do I miss about living in Texas? I miss my family there. I miss the great restaurants in Austin. I miss the music. I miss the wildflowers. I miss hearing (and haltingly speaking) Spanish. But one thing I do miss about living overseas is HEB.

As an immigrant living in Ireland this is really infuriating. I think it is really messed up to try to acquire international talent without providing an accurate picture of the housing crisis here, or adequate support. Also find it ridiculous how many places still don't allow renters to stay where they are renting for all 7 days of the week. Me not liking it here in Germany is one thing, but even my kefir grains hate it! 😩 I've never had so many issues with them. The house is waaaay too warm and the "it is winter, so you must be cold at all times" heating keeps overruling our temperature choices. Never thought I'd miss the Scottish damp, but I kinda almost do a little. Germans keep their houses at like 23C, and the heating systems seem to be set up to keep it there whether you want to or not.
