Back when the American Revolution first happened, the colonists at the time saw themselves as English. Obviously they fought a war to become a politically separate entity, but to be American and to be British were to be of the same “people” in a way that to be American and say, German wasn’t.
Of course over time, increased immigration and changing ideas about who gets to “count” as American means that is not really how we view things anymore.
I say all that to say this: everything great and cool about America* is a result of its de-Anglicisation.

#histodons: Congratulations to @CianTMcMahon for winning a Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award for his book "The Coffin Ship," a study of how Irish famine emigrants confronted life and death on board ship, building community in the face of great adversity. A fine work of #ImmigrationHistory.

Do you have items that tell the story of how your family came to Madison County? We'd love to take a look! The Madison County Historical Society, in collaboration with SIUE's IRIS Center and Department of History, is hosting a History Harvest on the theme of migration and immigration.
