Paper submitted! đŸ„ł

This one is a major win because 3/4 of us are . We fight with sleep deprivation, inconsistent childcare, countless illnesses and short-term contracts, so 1st author Franz Weyerer had to juggle our numerous work constraints on top of a challenging research project. But we made it work!

Here is our new showing how of accelerates or decelerates extinction.

Thanks for that paper, which I have read. You reminded me that I have not read any other articles in the PNAS special issue. And thanks for the website which I had not seen.

@Huia_fishocean - not a book, but the lead article (Wagner et al.) from this symposium and associated papers are a good recent update of what is known about I think all are open access.

Would any of the entomologists out there venture a recommendation of a book about the decline of insects that is more suitable for scientists? I found several popular accounts, but I would like something well referenced to use as a guide for delving deeper into the parts of the scientific literature that particularly catch my interest.

Some excellent graphics in this Reuters piece exploring the state of & the extent of our knowledge.

"[Insects are] the fabric tethering together every freshwater & terrestrial ecosystem across the planet.”

"The world has lost 5%-10% of all insect species in the last 150 years... 250,000 and 500,000 species"

Fossil fuel folks used to claim rising CO2 levels "helped green up the Earth".
One of our lab's most troubling discoveries—led by Dr. Ellen Welti now with the Smithsonian—is that even as grass production at Konza Prairie doubled over 20+ years, its nutrient content—the amount of nitrogen, potassium, sodium per bite—had plummeted. At the same time, grasshoppers—a foundation taxa—declined >30%.
This work was a finalist for the NAS Corazelli prize.

Who is going to attend the annual of SFE2 and GFÖ in Metz?

I'll be there, together with Avril Weinbach (postdoc) and Malina Palmer (soon-to-be PhD student). Both will present some really cool work on mutualistic systems. Are you joining as well? Then please let us know! We would love to get in touch!
