Another #ThrowbackThursday meets #InsectThursday -not great photos but fun to see the difference in this #butterfly depending on which side of the wings you see. Western White Pontia occidentalis, I think. Early #May, very little foliage or flowers yet- most early butterflies (overwintered) I see are not nectaring- I presume going about the business of mating/egg-laying? #nature #Alberta #spring @nature

On Monday, I spotted this praying mantis sunning himself on a cemetery path. Hard frost that night. I hope he enjoyed the heck out of that warmth on what was probably his last day of life. #InsectThursday

If you want to support #pollinators, plant a wide range of plants with different kinds of flowers-- small, composite, large, with a wide range of flowering times-- early and late are important. Just avoid overly double hybrids that have no visible sexy parts-- those are useless for pollinators!

Making a wildlife/pollinator #garden is not hard: first think #biodiversity- as many kinds of plants with diff habits, habitats, #flower sizes, flower types, seasons etc as possible!
When looking to attract #pollinators, don't just think of ornamental #flowers- many fruit and vegetable plants are very attractive to #insects eg- they go crazy for raspberry flowers-- + you / the critters get fruit later! #Permaculture #naturelovers #florespondence #InsectThursday @nature @plants
