@MattMastodon One of the problems is the incredibly low quality of our housing. Heat pumps are only viable in well-insulated buildings and ours are generally not.

Nützt es was?

@UKFilmNerd I enjoyed the thing recently where:

1) protesters raise awareness that UK housing stock needs to be better insulated

2) UK government throws them in jail

3) UK government sets targets for roll-out

4) Targets are missed because such a large proportion of homes… have insufficient insulation!

Oh wait, no, I didn't enjoy it, it made me frustrated, disappointed and angry…

Home heating bills could fall by £24bn if the efficiency of 13m homes was upgraded to at least a C rating under the energy performance certificate (EPC) scheme by 2030, from research by Citizens Advice.

Warmer homes could help avoid 6,000 unnecessary winter deaths every & save the about £2bn by preventing millions of people from developing respiratory conditions including asthma.

Irony alert.

UK Gov talking of removing gas subsidies, making it even MORE expensive for consumers as a way to nudge us off gas and onto heat pumps.

I'm all for heat pumps but they rely heavily on a well-insulated home as a starting point.

Even with grant support for a heat pump, the full cost of installation including precursor insulation, remains prohibitive for many who are not eligible for insulation grants.

Another missed opportunity for

History won't be kind on such judges, nor should it be.

Quite clearly, this is a perversion of procedure, and richer defendents would have been able to counter it.

"Today’s climate activist ‘criminals’ are tomorrow’s heroes: silencing them in court is immoral"
- George Monbiot writes in today's Guardian (22.02.2023) -
"It’s not ‘the whole truth and nothing but the truth’ if campaigners cannot explain their motivations to a jury"
...
"Police and prosecutors now have so many laws to choose from that they can both prevent any meaningful protest from happening and ensure that protesters’ defences are as weak as possible.
...
In 2020, a judge found three Extinction Rebellion protesters guilty of breaching a section 14 public order notice. But he is reported to have told them: “Thank you for your courtesy, thank you for your integrity, thank you for your honesty. You have to succeed.” He is said to have continued: “This is going to be my last Extinction Rebellion trial for a little while. I think they only allow us to do so many of these before our sympathies start to overwhelm us.”

Defendants in six criminal trials for Insulate Britain action have all been restricted from talking about the climate emergency, as a result of rulings by Reid. He told the jury on Monday: “Each defendant acted in the way they did because they felt it was necessary to do so to further their protests. I did not allow you to hear about their motivation because it wasn’t relevant.”
